Getting Dressed

I may have mentioned that I'm not looking forward to dress shopping. Since finding my dress is my next step in planning, I've been stalled. I'm not ready to put a dress on. I've been doing great with WW (will write about it soon). But I'm just not ready.

People are beginning to think that my hesitation towards dress shopping is somehow related to doubts about getting married. SO not so! I just have this vision of me struggling to find something to try on, not liking anything in my size and leaving feeling defeated. I know-whoa negativity-but it really is the way I feel. The absolute only part of my body that I am uncomfortable with is my arms. I know I can find a dress to show off my chest and waist, but I really do not want to wear a strapless at this point.

Believe me, I plan on losing some major poundage by October. I've been completely committed to a healthy lifestyle lately and have really been working hard. But I also know my body and I know my own insecurities.

Ok. So now that I've gotten that out, I want to share some great new dress finds. First, my fellow law school bride has tentatively decided on a NYE wedding night! I think it definitely suits their personality and will really set the tone for a fabulously glam wedding. I have a feeling she will go for a more traditional dress, but if anyone can pull off a sexy short wedding dress, it would be her!

Now, that's a bustle!

Ok, so now for me. I'm still looking for either sleeves or a separate bolero.

Overall, I do not love the dress below. What I do like is the way the sleeves blend with the dress. I like the lace look and I love the neckline. Very flattering.
The high collar adds so much drama. If I do separates, I might just do two different looks with the same dress. A two jacket bride!

I love the covered back and the gorgeous pickups. Of course it's ML and I think the whole ensemble retails for about $7k. Ouch.

I have to admit that I haven't absolutely fallen for any dress I've seen in pictures. I know I'm going to have to see it on before I really start to see what works and want does not. I do have hope that once I slip into the satin and lace, I will feel better about the whole situation. I'm trying to pick a weekend to just go and then possibly plan a little trip with some of my girls.

  2. Wow ... those are some pretty dresses. I'm with jane - $7K is way too much!
That being said, don't stress about the dress experience. Take a very trusted friend or your mom, make an appointment (note: not all salons require appointments), and just look. Don't have expectations of finding "the" dress. Don't expect to fall in love with your dress. Just look at different styles, different necklines, different silhouettes. Then pick a dress you really like and can imagine wearing when you get married.

That's my advice. Take it or leave. But I sometimes think the goal of finding "the" dress incites panic. I didn't find "the" dress. I found dress that I like. A lot. But I didn't cry or have "the" moment when I wore it. Just a feeling of satisfaction.

  3. Just a heads up - when I ordered my dress they told me it would take 6-8 months to come in, then another 2-3 months for alterations, so don't wait too long! :)

  5. I too am procrastinating about getting a dress and I am getting married May 8 of 2009 (THIS YEAR) I know I need to get my butt in gear but I am putting it off because I have an irrational fear that they will not have my size or I will look hideous. I will book an appt this week-baby steps lol

  7. You know, ML is having a SUPER sample sale in LA this Friday (like 40 - 70% off). I say this because I know that's where you got your amazing e-ring. Why not revisit the same chic shopping area?

Also, I think full-priced 5-month-long pre-order dresses are a little overrated. It may cause a little more stress closer to "go time," but you can ALWAYS get a sweet deal on a sample dress, never-worn dress (from those infamous 15 dress brides) or JCrew fabulous-ness much closer to your day.

I think FEELing fabulous is much more important - there are so many dresses out there, but only one YOU! ;)

  8. For starters, I am loving the new short dress rage and totally wish I could rock it enough to try it out. Alas, it was not meant to be. Secondly, I love love the notion of a two-jacket bride and hereby encourage you to do so! I'm on the hunt for a cute bolero to switch things up, so I will let you know if I find something great. And finally, I know all about dreading dress shopping. You'll get there. At the end of the day, you need to feel great and be comfortable so if you want to avoid strapless, find the dress that's perfect for you and you'll feel like a million bucks!

  9. I'm also dreading dress shopping. I wish my mom or my bridesmaids lived in the same state as me so we could take it on together.
